The City of Cranbrook is situated along Highways 3 and 95, in the scenic East Kootenay region of British Columbia. Located in the Rocky Mountain Trench, the city boasts beautiful views of the Purcell Mountains to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east.
With a population of 20,000, Cranbrook is the largest city in the region. The City serves as the retail and commercial service centre for south-eastern BC, capturing a service area of 60,000 people. As a result, the amenities are excellent. Numerous major retailers and shopping centres are located here. There are a variety of hotel and restaurant choices to accommodate all your needs.
Cranbrook finds a balance between being a vibrant modern city with the warmth and charm unique to "small-town" British Columbia.
There are many things to see and do during a visit to Cranbrook. Highlights include the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, internationally re-known for its outstanding collection of passenger rail equipment and buildings, including several complete train units.
A short drive from Cranbrook allows visitors to step back in time to 1888, to visit Fort Steele Heritage Town. Once a ghost town it has been transformed in to a significant heritage attraction with activities that include live theatre, stage coach, sleigh and steam engine rides, and a chance to pan for real gold.
A variety of concerts, theatre and special events take place at the Key City Theatre and the Cranbrook Rec-Plex.
Visitors from around the world come to experience the incredible variety of outdoor activities that are available. Mountain biking, golf, canoeing, hiking and fishing provide a small sample of what opportunities await. During the winter, Canada's finest ski resorts come alive at Kimberley, Fernie, Banff, Panorama, Snow Valley and Lake Louise, only short drives from Cranbrook. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are also exciting winter pursuits.
