The District of Mackenzie is a young community nestled in the Rocky Mountain Trench surrounded by lakes, mountains and untapped wilderness. The town carries forward not only the name but also Alexander Mackenzie's spirit of adventure and discovery. The community was virtually carved out of the wilderness in the mid 1960's to service large pulp and lumber manufacturing facilities.
Home to 4,500 people, residents enjoy pristine wilderness, endless recreation opportunities, and the benefits of life in a small town. There is truly something for eveyone from boating, kayaking and fishing in summer to an abundance of snow for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Mackenzie turns into a winter wonderland for five months out of the year with average snowfalls in town of three metres or more. There are over thirty kilometers of cross-country ski trails that are accessible right from town. With terrain ranging from ridges, lakes and creeks it provides for challenging terrain in a wilderness setting.
Mackenzie's Recreation Centre is a multi-sport venue including an ice rink, four-sheet curling rink, 25m competition-sized swimming pool, weight room equipped with hammer strength machines and meeting rooms. The centre can host opportunities for cross-training of arena sports in a central location within walking distance to accommodations and services.
