Fast Facts

Approximately 200 loonies ($1 coins) are buried beneath the Oval’s Activity Level. These loonies were used as good luck charms for Canadian speed skaters during the Olympics.

The Oval became the most the publicly accessible Olympic venue in history, prior to the Games, with over 300,000 people visiting and participating in sport, health, and wellness activities.

The Oval is the winner of the Institution of Structural Engineers top award for Sports or Leisure Structures.

The Oval’s spectacular 6.5 acre wood roof is one of the largest wide-span roofs in all of North America, and it was built using 1 million feet of salvaged pine beetle wood from forests in B.C.

The last roof panel put in place in the roof has over 8,000 signatures on it wishing Team Canada good luck.

The rain water collected from the Oval’s massive roof is re-used to flush the toilets in the building, and to irrigate the plants and water-sky garden surrounding the facility.

The Oval features British Columbia’s only publicly accessible indoor rowing and paddling tank.

Decorative wood used for some areas of interior was milled from trees growing on the original site.

The Oval uses electrical ice resurfacers which do not produce green house gas emissions.

Ice heats our building - the excess energy from the refrigeration unit for ice making is used to heat and cool the building.
